Library:
Do you love books, cataloging, and bringing order to chaos? We have a specialized library with over 2000 resources available to the SFU community to enjoy. Our library wants YOUR love.

Queer History Project:
Working to preserve the 40+ years of queer organizing and activism at Simon Fraser University by creating an engaging and accessible archive.

Positive Space Network:
Working to create an educational program that will help reduce homophobia and transphobia on campus, and create a network of resource people and safe spaces on campus. 

Trans* & Gender-Diversity Project:
Informed by personal accounts, this project is currently developing a resource guide for trans* and gender diverse folks at SFU. 

 

2. Office Training sessions – Tue Jan 7th, Wed Jan 8th, Fri Jan 10th

Attention current OOC volunteers! Want to help keep keep OOC open by holding Office Hours? OOC will be holding Office Trainings for current volunteers during the first week of classes in the OOC Lounge, TC314N.

If you received Office Training in November, you aren't required to re-take the January trainings. In order to accommodate everyone's schedules, we will be holding training at three different times.

3. Volunteer sign-ups for Spring Outreach, Office Hours

Hey again, current volunteers. Please come on in to the lounge to get the jump on signing up for this semester’s Office Hours, and for tabling at Burnaby and Surrey Clubs Days. Remember, we can’t do any of this without you!  

 

4. Interim Collective – Wed Jan 8th 1pm-2:30pm & Wed Jan 15th 11:30am-1:30pm in the OOC Lounge (TC314N)

Collective is the decision-making body of Out on Campus, and meets weekly to oversee everything from events and budgets to the vision and direction of OOC. Collective is run by a consensus decision making process, which values discussion before seeking a majority decision. Everyone is welcome at Collective.

Regular Collective timing for the rest of the semester will be announced at a later time.

6. Mindfulness Stress-Reduction Hour – starts Jan 23rd, weekly on Thurs 1:30-2:15pm in the OOC Lounge (TC314N)

Out on Campus will be hosting a drop-in weekly Mindfulness hour facilitated by SFU Health & Counselling Services. It will be held in the lounge (TC314N). Please be prompt! Mindfulness is a form of meditation that quiets the mind. It helps you become focused, rest from constant thinking, and reduces stress. Practice being here, in the present, and let go of worries about the future and the past. This is a drop-in workshop, open to all.

 

7. CJSF Spoken Word Programming Assistant – Application deadline: Thu Jan 9th

The Spoken Word Assistant will work as part of a team with the Spoken Word Coordinator, volunteers and work studies to coordinate and produces spoken word and public affairs programming on CJSF 90.1FM Radio. A main focus of this position will be to organize a series of professionally led spoken word skills workshops. 12 hours a week at $15/hour, until August 29, 2014. See the posting for full details.

8. BuildSFU Student Advisory Committee Nominations – due Fri Jan 17th

Join the Student Advisory Committee for Spring 2014! 

To nominate yourself for the vacant student-at-large position, please fill out this survey by Friday, January 17 at 11:59pm.

The Student Advisory Committee is one of the many opportunities for students to advise Build SFU on various aspects of the project such as consultations, communications, and outreach. The committee will receive regular updates about the project and is a fun place to participate in the planning process.

 

9. Briarpatch Magazine seeking submissions – queries due Tue Jan 7th

Briarpatch is seeking submissions for our May/June 2014 issue. We are looking for feature articles, provocative essays, investigative reportage, interviews, profiles, reviews, humour, and photography rooted in an anti-colonial and anti-capitalist analysis. If you’ve got a story in mind, we want to hear your pitch!

Queries are due January 7, 2014. If your query is accepted, first drafts will be due by February 11. Your query should outline what ground your contribution will cover, give an estimated word count, and indicate your relevant experience or background in writing about the issue. If you haven’t written for Briarpatch before, please provide a brief writing sample.

Please review our submission guidelines before sending your query to editor AT briarpatchmagazine DOT com.

Our standard rates of pay are as follows:

·  $50 – Profiles, short essays, parting shots (generally <1000 words)

·  $100 – Feature stories, photo essays

·  $150 – Research-based articles and investigative reportage (generally 1500-2500 words)

10. SASC Zine Call for Submissions

The Sexual Assault Support Centre at UBC is seeking submissions for a zine to be published in the Spring.

"Let's talk about peer and community education, allyship and against violence and rape culture, and building better futures and nows.

Topic ideas include:
Guides and tips for starting conversations and dialogue (as a friend, as a leader, as a community member, online, in workshops, and/or everywhere)
Creative work and reflections (Poetry, Prose, Visual Art, Comics)
Strategies for explaining concepts and systems of power
Reflections on awareness building
Principles and understandings that shape your approaches
Self Care and Community Care
