2013-2014 Annual Report (coming soon)

What is an Annual General Meeting?

The highest level of decision-making authority within the Simon Fraser Student Society is its Annual General Meeting or AGM.

General Meetings are places where undergraduate students make decisions on issues ranging from SFSS finances to policies, bylaws or other matters.

Every member of the SFSS – that’s every undergraduate student — has a vote on items that are on the agenda.

When is the Annual General Meeting?

Wednesday, October 22nd at 1:30 PM in the SFU Theatre

Every undergraduate student enrolled in classes is encouraged to attend!

Where is the SFU Theatre?

Located at Convocation Mall, across from the library and next to the Maggie Benston Centre.

What will happen at the AGM?

Various topics are voted on like the approval of minutes, presentation of reports including society updates and finances (Click here to read the 2013-2014 audited statements.).

There will also be two very important decisions at this year’s AGM about the Build SFU project.

1. Special Resolution allowing the SFSS to enter into a debenture (a loan)

We want to build your SUB as soon as possible. In order to make this happen, the SFSS must get a loan from a bank to pay for the project. The Build SFU levy will then be used to pay back the loan as the levy is collected over time.

2. By-Law Addition

In order to get a more affordable interest rate and save students money, we need to give the bank reassurance that the SFSS can and will pay back the loan. We can do this by showing that students support the Build SFU project and agree to repay the loan. This is done by adding a bylaw to ensure that any society fee that is attached to the repayment of a loan will continue to be collected until such loan is paid off. So, the Build SFU levy will be collected until the loan is repaid.

The by-law proposed reads as follows:

“The Society may not revoke, reduce or otherwise cancel a duly approved student society fee that has been implemented for the purpose of repaying a loan made to the Society or on the basis of which a loan has been made to the Society if the effect of such revocation, reduction or cancellation would be to cause the Society to be unable to repay the loan as it became due.”

Come out to the AGM on Wednesday, October 22nd at 1:30 pm at the SFU Theatre and be a part of your student society and community. The campus of tomorrow depends on it!
