June 21, 2023

The SFSS would like to celebrate and acknowledge that June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day. The SFSS acknowledges that it is located on the traditional, unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) and q̓ icə̓y̓ (Katzie) Nations. We are grateful for the privilege to live, work, and study on these lands, and to use this opportunity to learn, support, and amplify Indigenous Nations, Communities, and Community Members.

Indigenous Peoples Day and Indigenous Peoples Month celebrate Indigenous Peoples and Communities across Turtle Island and recognize their ongoing resilience and advocacy. The SFSS would like to recognize the hard work done by Indigenous Community Members both in and outside of the SFU Community. The SFSS continues to work towards prioritizing Indigenous voices and ensuring they are provided with the space and resources needed to support efforts of dismantling institutional and colonial barriers. We encourage members of the SFSS, SFU, and the local community to use this day as an opportunity to learn more about reconciliation efforts and how we can support Calls to Actions.

Finally, we would like to congratulate the Indigenous Graduates of 2023 and recognize your hard work and perseverance throughout your academic journey.

Have a great week and Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!
