April 28, 2025

The Simon Fraser Student Society is deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver on Saturday, April 27, 2025. What began as a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture and heritage ended in a tragedy that resulted in the loss of lives and left several others injured, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected, and we stand in solidarity with the Filipino community in Vancouver and here at Simon Fraser University. To our Filipino students at SFU, we recognize the pain, fear, and sadness that this tragedy has caused. You are not alone — your grief is shared by many, and your safety, culture, and well-being matter deeply to us.

The SFSS stands with the community in mourning and healing. We are committed to supporting Filipino students and cultural groups during this time, and we encourage anyone affected by this event to seek support through SFU Health & Counselling, the SFSS Student Advocacy Office, or trusted on and off campus organizations. We are here to listen, to support, and to act in solidarity.

As a student society, we remain devoted to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful campus environment for all. As we move forward together in unity and strength, we reaffirm our collective commitment to justice, healing, and cultural celebration in the face of tragedy.

In Solidarity,

Your Student Society
