April 27, 2018

At the April 7, 2018 meeting of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) Board of Directors, the Board unanimously approved a new agreement that will see the SFSS provide a broad range of service and support for students attending Fraser International College (FIC), beginning January 2nd, 2019. The recommendation to review a potential partnership originated from Council in May 2017.

“It is important for FIC students, who come from across the globe, to feel connected to our SFU campus community.  This new agreement will ensure that FIC students make meaningful contributions that will help us continue to build our capacity to deliver the services and supports our members need.” said Hangue Kim, President of the SFSS.

Sharla Reid, College Director and Principal of Fraser International College, is also pleased with the new agreement. “This agreement will enhance the sense of welcome on campus for FIC students by allowing them to fully engage in campus social life.  By being able to utilize important services like the Women’s Centre, Out on Campus and Clubs students can build a support network and community they can rely throughout their time on campus.  The students will also bring their global perspectives and enthusiasm to be able to add further value to the SFU campus community.”

The new agreement will see FIC students contribute funds to the SFSS in exchange for key services and support, including the following:

  • Participating in existing SFSS clubs
  • Developing new clubs
  • Assistance for planning events, booking rooms, securing equipment
  • Developing policies and procedures
  • Access to the student union building and other SFSS spaces on SFU campuses
  • Access to grant funds
  • Access to the food bank service, free legal clinic, Women’s Centre, Out on Campus and other SFSS programs and services

While FIC students will receive access to these services and support, they will not be considered members of the SFSS and will not be eligible to vote in SFSS elections.

With the agreement in place, the SFSS will begin planning to develop the additional capacity required to support the influx of FIC students who will be needing support, beginning January 2019.
