Campaigns, Research & Policy Coordinator

Description: The Campaigns, Research & Policy Coordinator coordinates necessary research on behalf of the Society in support of Society campaigns and initiatives as well as interpreting, maintaining and developing Society and other policies. The Campaigns, Research & Policy Coordinator assists in the administration of the Society’s Resource office, its systems, records, and activities, and provides advice and support to the elected officials of the Society.

This is a full time position scheduled at 35 hours per week.  This is a unionized position with membership in Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3338-5 at a wage rate of $25.00 per hour with additional benefits as defined in the Collective Agreement.

Goal: To work with Board and staff to develop and implement campaign strategies that align with key advocacy priorities and will support or help to mobilize stakeholders to undertake action to achieve desired organizational and university policy change

Working Relationship(s)/Role in Organizational Structure: The Campaigns, ­Research & Policy Coordinator works closely with the Communications Coordinator. The Campaigns, Research & Policy Coordinator reports to the Executive Director and serves as an advisor to the Executive Committee, Advocacy Committee, Constitution and Policy Review Committee, and other committees as required. The Campaigns, Research and Policy Coordinator attends meetings of the Board of Directors as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Research & Policy:

  • Coordinate with the Board and other staff to undertake timely, regular and relevant research work on educational or other issues of importance to the Society, its membership, and the University environment
  • Undertake research related to Society goals, campaigns and policy development
  • Provide concise and comprehensive analysis, interpretation, and strategic recommendations to elected officials regarding Society policies, agreements, contracts, external documents and materials
  • Assist elected officials with the review and development of the Society’s Constitution, By-Laws, policies and procedures ensuring that best practices and protocols are met, and consulting with SFSS legal on same as appropriate
  • Assist in the development of educational material for members on policy
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the Society, its structures, priorities, policies, agreements, contracts, events and activities

General:

  • Act as a resource person for Society committees, including when necessary distributing agendas, materials, taking minutes, producing reports, and assisting in campaign organization
  • Work to ensure the Society’s goals, interests, and direction are maintained and advanced, and maintain the confidentiality of the Society’s records, activities and affairs
  • In conjunction with the Communications Coordinator maintain records, resource materials and prepare the annual office budget
  • Provide input on the operations and activities of the Resource Office, its functions and programs
  • Coordinate and undertake the timely and accurate maintenance and updating of Society records, documents and resources, including ensuring statutory and regulatory requirements and standards as set out in the Society Act and University Act are met
  • Encourage and support coordination activities with Executive Officers, members of the Board, staff and volunteers to develop programs, activities, and events that address issues of concern to the membership
  • Assist, support, counsel and advise the Executive Officers, Director, the Board of Directors and committees of the Society
  • Provide support to all SFSS departmental campaign activities
  • Establish, build and facilitate coalitions among community interests and need
  • Liaise and negotiate with the University and other relevant external parties in relation to democratic functions
  • Keep track of campaign activity and support the development and production of all SFSS campaigning
  •  Other tasks which may be assigned

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience/ knowledge of developing campaign strategies and of using different campaigning tools or approaches, including social media to achieve organizational goals
  • Skills and experience utilizing multiple research sources, and producing accurate and succinct research resource materials in support of Society campaigns and initiatives
  • Skilled in researching and interpreting organizational policy
  • Broad knowledge of and experience in conducting legislative, administrative advocacy in a post-secondary education environment
  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures and governing structures
  • Knowledge of post-secondary student organizations’ structure and mandate
  • Computing skills (including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software)
  • Ability to take minutes, compile records, and produce meeting reports and related documents
  • Ability to work in a demanding, self-supervisory, multi-task environment, within clear timelines
  • Strong interpersonal skills by being proactive in maintaining organizational communications and working relationships
  • Some communications skills and experience, including materials production and media work an asset
  • Administrative ability and experience
