Here’s what your SFSS Board of Directors has been up to during the month of June:

The Board had an interesting and productive month of June.

The first Board meeting of the month was on 12th June. President Osob Mohamed gave  an overview of the Executive Committee’s report and recommendations. The Executive Committee reviewed job descriptions, employment contracts, and administrative structures of difference societies across BC and Canada. VP University Relations Gabe Liosis then gave a report on the Governance Committee’s Governance Review and Restructuring Report recommendations. We passed a motion to repeal and replace our current governance documents with newly developed Board Policies and Administrative Policies that reflected the governance changes as recommended in the report.

The Board met for the second time on 26th of June. Motions were raised and passed regarding a food hub project, SFU Athletics Team name change, BIPOC committee and HR & personal committee members and chair appointment and establishing a working group for improving the accessibility of SFSS website. The discussions revolved around important issues such as, Annual General Meeting chair appointment, Student Union donations, Fall U-Pass, SFU health and counselling services collaboration and Greek Life Organizations where many Board Members voiced their support for Greek Life Organizations.

The SFSS with the collaboration of SFU COVID-19 Coalition will be holding a virtual Town Hall on July 7 to discuss the challenges the students and workers face with remote  learning. Our VP External Samad Raza and VP Student Services Matthew Provost have collaborated with Tara Flynn, the SFU Civic Engagement Coordinator to start a food hub project to address the issues that the students are facing in regards to food security amidst the Covid-19 crisis. The SFSS held a FREE Financial Literacy workshop on June 29th,   and will be holding another workshop regarding ‘investments’ on July 9th.

Our BIPOC and First Year Engagement Committees have hit the ground running after the appointment of their respective chairs and members. Our committees have also sent out the applications for At-large members which can be accessed via our website. Some of the projects that Finance and Audit committee is working on are; implementation of Investment Policy, Researching Participatory Budget, reviewing Club and Student Union Funding
