July 7, 2022

June was a lively month for the SFSS, with exciting initiatives and more in-person events taking place. Summer Fest was held on Burnaby campus on June 22, and Surrey campus on June 29 in collaboration with SFU, thanks to our VP Events and staff’s hard work. Meanwhile, the President, VP External and Community Affairs, and the VP Equity and Sustainability attended the 2022 Labour Notes conference in Chicago where they acquired skills to further advance staff well-being and grassroots-based advocacy work. The SFSS also hosted a townhall to advocate for the elimination of the international student healthcare fee, with a great turnout. We were also able to celebrate the many years of student advocacy and lobbying leading to Translink commitment to prioritize building the gondola to SFU!

Full summary of what happened in June 2022 below:

  • SFSS hosted Summer Fest in collaboration with SFU at Surrey campus after a successful event at Burnaby. More photos on Instagram!
  • The President, VP External and Community Affairs, and the VP Equity and Sustainability attended the 2022 Labour Notes conference with thousands of union organizers to learn, share knowledge and represent the SFSS at workshops. They were able to meet with inspiring organizers such as the Starbucks Labor Union, Amazon Labour Union President Chris Smalls, Bernie Sanders and more.
  • The SFSS helped host a Townhall to inform students of the unfair international student health fee and begin the launch of the campaign to remove the fee.
  • The VP Finance provided insight to the auditors on the history of the SFSS and assisted them in looking at our current financial state.

With the support of our wonderful Executive Committee, staff and partners, we are able to celebrate advocacy campaigns such as the removal of the international student health fee, and we look forward to what the following months have to bring!
