June 13, 2025

The Simon Fraser Student Society extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by the recent Air India crash that occurred on June 12, 2025. The devastating accident, which involved Air India Flight AI171 en route from Ahmedabad, Western India, to London Gatwick, tragically resulted in the loss of 241 passengers and crew, including Indians, Britons, Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. As of the moment, a sole survivor has been confirmed. Our hearts are heavy, and we stand in solidarity with the families, friends, and communities grieving this profound loss.

This tragedy has deeply impacted the Indian student community, including many here at Simon Fraser University. As an institution enriched by its international diversity, we mourn alongside those who have been affected. The SFSS recognizes the emotional and psychological toll such events can have, particularly for those far from home, and we urge all students to prioritize their well-being during this difficult time.

We want to reaffirm our unwavering support for the Indian student community and all members of the SFU community who have been touched by this tragedy. We encourage students to make use of the mental health and wellness resources available, including SFU Health & Counselling Services (www.sfu.ca/students/health.html) and the MySSP Student Support Program, which offers 24/7 multilingual mental health counselling accessible via app or phone. Additionally, community-based support can be found through the Burnaby Mental Health Centre and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Counselling Services, which provides culturally sensitive care to immigrants and international students.

In moments like these, our collective strength lies in compassion, connection, and community. The SFSS stands with each and every student, faculty member, and staff member, particularly those of Indian descent affected by this heartbreaking incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Your Student Society (SFSS)
