Description: The Trans and Gender Diversity Project Worker is tasked to create a guide for trans and gender diverse students to aid them in accessing the university and updating their records (such as how to change their name and gender markers). The position will also oversee the implementation of other trans friendly programming through Out on Campus.

This is a temporary part time position scheduled at up to 12 hours per week.  This temporary position will end on April 30th, 2016, but may be extended. This is a unionized position with membership in Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3338-5 at a wage rate of $14.87 per hour with additional benefits as defined in the Collective Agreement.

Goal: To create a Trans and Gender Diversity guide aimed at assisting trans and gender diverse students with their post-secondary experience.

Working Relationship(s)/Role in Organizational Structure: The Trans and Gender Diversity Project Worker takes direction from and reports to the Out on Campus Volunteer and Program Coordinator. In the event of an absence of the Out on Campus Volunteer and Program Coordinator the Project Worker will report to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Research how trans people are affected by the following policies at SFU: Human Rights Policies, Housing and Residence, Washrooms (IE location of gender inclusive washrooms), Records and Documents (IE how a student changes their gender marker), health and counseling (IE whether health and counseling has any training and experience in dealing with trans patients), sports and rec, and trans friendly programming on campus
  2. Synthesize this research into sections of the guide and write these sections
  3. Interview past and present trans students and include their experiences in the guide
  4. Interview various members of the SFU community that have relevant information to place into the guide
  5. Oversee the trans and gender diversity project advisory committee of Out on Campus
  6. Create an introduction and glossary to the guide
  7. Work with SFSS Communications Coordinator to format and design the guide, as well as work with other Society staff as required
  8. Assist with the activities of the trans and gender diversity project advisory committee

Required Skills and Experience:

  1. Knowledge about various transgender identities and the unique concerns of various trans identities
  2. Knowledge of various SFU policies and/or knowledge of how to access those policies
  3. Solid ability to write clearly and concisely
  4. Good organizational skills
  5. Ability to synthesize information effectively
  6. Solid communication skills
