June 30, 2020

Last Friday the SFSS Board of Directors discussed the matter of Student Unions and Groups being able to contribute their Core funds to Black-led and/or Indigenous-led causes and organizations. This led to a motion to suspend the relevant policy until August 1, 2020 to give Student Unions and Groups time to have a meeting and pass a motion.

Here is the motion approved by the Board:
Whereas student unions have reached out with the desire to donate to Black Lives Matter-focused causes with core funds,  Whereas the use of these funds for supporting events and other activities is reduced due to COVID-19 and social distancing,

Whereas the SFSS Board of Directors at the June 12th board meeting approved a $3,000 donation to the Black in BC Community Emergency Support Fund for COVID-19,

Whereas the SFSS has released a statement on June 1st, 2020 in support of Black Lives Matter and Indigenous peoples and encouraged students to support Black-led initiatives and organizations,

Be it resolved to suspend MGP-4 4.14.a until August 1st, 2020 to allow student unions to donate core funding to Black-led causes and organizations and/or Indigenous-led causes and organizations.

Important notes:

  • If you submitted a cheque requisition for your donation in the last 2 months, it will be processed shortly.
  • If you’d prefer the SFSS to make a donation on behalf of your Union or Group and pay from your Core funds, please email your meeting minutes to Anna Reva at msc.unions@sfss.ca along with a link to the donation of your choice.
  • If you’d like to make your own donation now, please follow the cheque requisition process as described here.
  • When choosing the charity or organization to donate to, please ensure there is no conflict of interest. This means that the donation should not benefit an individual within your group. If you have any doubts, please reach out to confirm eligibility.
