Here’s what your SFSS Board of Directors has been up to during the month of July:

The SFSS Board of Directors has had another eventful month this past July. After passing our new strategic plan with our vision, “Students Thriving Everywhere,” we have embarked on a myriad of activities for the betterment of the student body.

In our advocacy efforts, we attended Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation alongside the University and the advocacy group, Build the SFU Gondola, in support and in anticipation of the Mayors’ Council passing a motion to move forward with the next stages of the Burnaby Mountain Gondola. In addition, we had our VP University Relations (Shina Kaur) and Science Representative (Simran Uppal) attended the 76th Semi-Annual British Columbia Federation of Students (BCFS) General Meeting. We worked with industry professionals and student leaders to discuss coordinating and partnering on campaigns such as Knockout Interest, Open Textbooks Now, Grants not Loans, and Fairness for International Students.

We also had events over July via our Events Committee who collaborated with SFU Movie Nights to provide students and families with a $1 BBQ. The turnout was amazing and everyone enjoyed burgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks while watching ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2!’

Our Arts and Social Sciences Representative (Jennifer Chou) and the Events Committee also launched Mental Wellness Day and established a booth for students to learn more about the importance of mental health and well-being while handing out Mental Health Care Packages. Free cookies and lemonade were provided, and students were invited to write positive, motivational sticky notes to put on a rolling board. Volunteers from an SFSS mental health club, Pursuit of Happiness, joined us in promoting this initiative.

We hope you enjoyed all these events and activities and support in the advocacy efforts. Good luck on all your exams and we hope that you took a mental health care package along with you!
