Sep. 25, 2015 – Burnaby, B.C. — Sept. 25, 2015 — Vancouver BC — The Simon Fraser Student Society’s Advocacy Committee is holding an Burnaby North-Seymour All Candidate Debate on October 1st, 2015 at SFU Burnaby campus in a buildup to the federal elections.
The debate is scheduled to encompass a wide range of issues, including Women’s Issues, Education, Climate Change, Democracy, and Indigenous Rights.
“Many university students are looking for information on political platforms and this is an excellent opportunity to engage directly with the candidates,” explained Arr Farah, SFSS Arts and Social Sciences Representative, adding that “the debate allows the candidates to exchange their views, but also present the voters with their personal take on important issues relevant to Burnaby North-Seymour and beyond.”
“The SFSS Advocacy Committee wants to ensure that students get to actively participate in federal elections and that goes beyond merely voting. This debate presents us with an opportunity to reflect on national but also local issues at stake,” explained Kathleen Yang, SFSS VP External Relations. “Post-secondary students generally represent an important, yet often marginalized vote. The Debate opens up the opportunity for over twenty thousand students to consider the long-term repercussions of federal elections on an array of policies, relevant to their own future communities and prospects,” added Yang.
The Debate encompasses candidates from the New Democratic Party, Liberal Party, and the Green Party, and will provide students and local residents an valued opportunity to engage the candidates on relevant voter issues. Conservatives declined to participate.
